Alex Lee Moyer started her career directing & editing music videos and short form content in the Vice-dominated early 00’s (and occasionally as a Vice employee.) In 2017, she edited Adam Bhala Lough’s documentary The New Radical about the golden age of crypto anarchism. Her efforts earned the film a spot at Sundance 2017 and an acknowledgement of her editing by The New York Times as being “perilously neutral.” In 2020, Moyer made her directorial debut with the independent low-budget documentary TFW No GF— an empathetic assessment of 4chan and incel culture. The film went on to become the sleeper hit of SXSW, going viral in a week-long Amazon COVID run that attracted both widespread acclaim and controversy. Critics called it “memorably unnerving,” “a layered, fascinating exploration of a subculture,” and even “the defining documentary of our generation.” Alex’s War marks Moyer’s second film as an auteur filmmaker, representing the culmination of her efforts so far in depicting difficult but culturally relevant subjects. Moyer’s self-proclaimed mission is to create authentic observational cinema about the unprecedented cultural moment we are living through, whatever the cost.

In Episode 267 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Alex Lee Moyer the filmmaker behind “Alex’s War,” an excellent new documentary about Alex Jones, the founder of Infowars. Alex is an incredibly controversial cultural figure and media personality whose popularity and influence have become especially difficult to measure since he was banned from YouTube and most every other major media and social media platform in 2018.
Jones granted Moyer unprecedented access for a documentary that is truly unique in both its political appeal and in how it intimately captures parts of Alex’s life that very few people outside of his immediate community have been able to experience. It is an exploration of our relationship to truth and our distrust of mainstream institutions that grapples gracefully with the broader cultural and political moment that we are living through as a country.
This episode is meant to expose you to many of the cultural cross-currents that inform some of the political and social views of millions of Americans, with the goal of advancing our understanding of one another and helping to bridge the cultural divide that seems to be tearing our country apart.
