Roger Hirst spent over two decades on the equity derivative desks at various investment banks including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, SBC Warburg, and Deutsche Bank. His specialty was multi-asset and macro sales, working with some of the world’s leading macro and equity long/short hedge funds and major multi-asset institutions. At Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, he was instrumental in building London’s leading Delta-1 franchises for sector and bespoke basket flow trading. Currently, Roger is the Managing Editor of Real Vision Creative Studios where he researches, writes, and presents a weekly macro show for Refinitiv (part of LSEG), as well as consults with leading financial institutions on their content and media strategy. Roger received a Master’s Degree in Geography and an MSc in Agricultural Economics, both from Oxford University, where he rowed for the Oxford Second VIII (Isis). He occasionally still hauls himself down the river, though the glory days have now been dulled by a penchant for food and wine. Jacob Shapiro is Partner & Director of Geopolitical Analysis at Cognitive Investments, where he integrates geopolitics directly into CI’s investment strategies. In addition to his research duties, he authors the “Global Situation Report,” a weekly intelligence brief on the world’s most important developments, and hosts the podcast series, “Cognitive Dissidents“, which features interviews with a diverse array of foreign policy, technology, and global business experts. He is also the Founder and Chief Strategist of Perch Perspectives, a business and political risk consulting firm that works directly with a group of select clients, helping to identify and plan for key global risks to their supply chains. Previously, Jacob was Director of Analysis at Geopolitical Futures (GPF), which he co-founded with strategist George Friedman. Before GPF, Jacob was Director of the Operations Center at Stratfor, the geopolitical intelligence firm. He received a Master’s Degree with distinction from Oxford University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell University in Near Eastern Studies. Jacob is an expert connoisseur of cheeseburgers and when he doesn’t have his head buried in a book, you can find him at a random pick-up basketball game somewhere in New Orleans doing his best Larry Bird impersonation.

In Episode 292 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Roger Hirst and Jacob Shapiro. Roger has spent over two decades on the equity derivative desks at various investment banks and is currently the Managing Editor of Real Vision Creative Studios. Jacob is Partner & Director of Geopolitical Analysis at Cognitive Investments and Founder and Chief Strategist of the business and political risk consulting firm Perch Perspectives. Both Roger and Jacob are part of a small and highly talented team of content creators at financial media company Lykeion, where they co-author a monthly research publication focused on the converging worlds of Geopolitics & Macro.
The first hour of today’s conversation is devoted to a discussion about the move from a unipolar world order to a multipolar one. The forces that are bringing that multipolarity about and its impact on global security, international trade, and commerce are a key part of that conversation, as is Russia’s war in Ukraine and the future of the European Union. In the second hour, Roger and Jacob give their assessments on what all of this means for the global economy and the market opportunities available to investors. This includes a conversation about inflation, the bull case for commodities, investment opportunities in emerging markets, central bank policy, and much more.
